Ein Letztes Lied

Named after Strauss’s “Four Last Songs”, the lyrics are adapted from Herman Hesse’s original lyrics. It’s

dedicated to Mum, who died in 2020.

Walk in darkness below towering branches high

See the bird skim the golden sky

Now the night’s at an end, sunlight in your eyes

Living each hour as if the last

Flowers fill with cold rain, chill this dying domain

Golden dew falls as if in vain

With a glance at the rose, sudden lust for peace

Summer slips gently into sleep

Hands - let everything go, mind - be glad to follow

Where the tide wants to make me go

I no longer defend, now is time to relent

Gathering of the souls commence

Now I've passed every gate, peace grows wider and still

Beauty is everywhere

Let each breath be the last, take my hand and hold fast

Freedom is here at last
